The Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão de Oliveira do Hospital (Oliveira do Hospital Management and Technology School) (ESTGOH) is destined to management and engineering training and its main goal is to train human resources for the country’s economic fabric, especially at a local level.

This school started operating in the academic year 2001/2002, progressively creating programmes based on updated contents, curricula and methodologies, representing an adequate and solid model, mainly in regard to the quality of the academic staff and knowledge transfer.

Thus, the most recent school of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra intends to contribute for local and national development, meet the offer/demand ratio of applicants and employers, giving preference to national student mobility and, at the same time, be the preferred choice of local students from the municipalities adjoining Oliveira do Hospital.

As a matter of fact, ESTGOH operates according to a local logic. The developed work is fundamental to retain the population in the area, and some post-graduate students actually begin their career in the region. One of the school’s concerns is, in fact, to empower the students for the next step: the moment of transition into the labour market, preparing them, whether for the corporate world, or for creating their own business.

By promoting local entrepreneurship, besides the close relationship with the business incubator, ESTGOH also invests in the interconnection with local agents. Hence, it integrates the programme of Desenvolvimento Local de Base Comunitária (Community-based Local Development programme) (DLBC), in order to manage the EU funds to be applied in the framework of Europe 2020 Strategy.

One of the school’s particular aspects is that it is an higher education institution at the heart of a city where the cost of living is lower than in the district capitals.
