Teaching Methodologies
The 6 ECTS correlates to 160 total work hours, being 60h of contact hours with the students, in theoretical and practical classes.
The expository methodology will be adopted for the presentation of theoretical concepts, using slideshow presentations and videos. Applied data search by students will be stimulated, consulting the nutritional value of foods and predicting nutrient requirement using tables at reference bibliography (including online databases or software). Feed formulation calculation examples. Field visit to compound feeds manufacturer.
Learning Results
The main outcome of this curricular unit is to provide students with the fundamental principles of animal feeding:
1. Knows animal feeds
2. Knows the factors affecting the voluntary intake of ruminant and non-ruminant animals
3. Understands the nutritional needs according to production phases
4. Interpret feed and requirements nutritional tables
5. Use adequate methods to formulate diets for different animal species and production level
6. Understands the process and technical operations of compound feeds manufacturing.
Program
1. Animal Feeds
1.1. Nutritional characterization of most common feedstuffs.
1.2. Interpretation of feed composition and nutritional value tables.
1.3. Feed additives
2. Control mechanisms and factors that affects food and water intake.
3. Prediction of nutritional needs of livestock species at distinct production levels.
4. Ration formulation for different levels of production and different livestock species. General calculation methodologies: Pearson square and linear programming.
5. Organic animal feeding: rules and legislation.
6. Compound feeds manufacturing
6.1. The sector in Portugal, Europe and the global market.
6.2. Rules and legislation related to compound feeds technology.
6.3. The compound feed manufactory: sectors and planning.
6.4. Equipment and technological processing of feeds and ingredients.
