Teaching Methodologies

The classes aim to develop skills in researching, selecting, and critically evaluating available evidence.

Tutorial guidance: Students will be guided by faculty members assigned with teaching workload distribution.

Learning Results

Gather and evaluate evidence and information from a wide range of sources using data collection and interpretation methods to provide information that guides or benefits the practice of physiotherapy;

Critically assess the evidence resulting from research and apply it to practice when appropriate, contributing to the inquisitive culture and commitment to best practices in the profession, including the ability to apply learning to practice.

Program

1. Evidence-based practice (EBP)

Concept of EBP and its evolution;

EBP and clinical practice in healthcare professions;

Relationship between EBP and clinical effectiveness and efficacy;

Main instruments of EBP: umbrella reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials (RCTs);

Systems for grading evidence.

2. Researching scientific evidence

Use of the Internet and content evaluation;

Sources of evidence (evidence-based practice websites, evidence-based practice centers, guidelines);

Evidence search strategies (levels of evidence);

Online research process;

Development of research questions;

Planning and development of research including practical planning and development sessions.

3. Critical analysis of scientific evidence

Critical analysis of evidence and practice supported by the best available evidence;

Advantages and disadvantages of the critical analysis process;

Screening process and detailed analysis;

Analysis criteria and use of evidence evaluation tools;

Practice in evaluating randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews.
