Base Knowledge
As a first-year subject, basic knowledge is recommended for those arising from Access to Higher Education.
Teaching Methodologies
The curricular unit will be developed according to a theoretical model with moments of structured exposition of the contents and respective analysis and discussion or debate.
An interrogative and interactive methodology will be used prior to the presentation of the main contents and concepts, and demonstration/exemplified of them through their practical application in everyday situations and resorting, whenever justified, to videos, computer programs, professional tools.
It also includes, and whenever justified, the autonomous study with research on the exposed contents and the reading and critical analysis of articles/texts.
Learning Results
Sensitize the student to issues of an ethical nature, namely those related to the area of health;
Analyze the ethical consequences related to the advancement of technology and medicine;
Contribute to a better knowledge of deontological aspects and their applicability in the professional field;
Knowing the values, of a personal nature, and the underlying ethical principles, enabling a reflection on the its applicability in the profession and in society in general;
Identify new ethical paradigms and adopt a critical approach to decision making;
Understand and analyze specific concepts and apply them to problems of an ethical nature.

1 - BIOETHICS - GENERAL CONCEPTS - 2 hours
Definition of ethics, structure and origin of the concept;
Values / principles / standards;
Definition of bioethics, structure and origin of the concept;
Bridge between ethics and bioethics;
2 – ETHICS, BIOETHICS AND PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL ETHICS - 8 hours
Distinction between ethics and morals;
Distinction between ethics and law;
Distinction between ethics and religion;
The first bioethical theorizing initiatives: principalism;
Fundamental principles in bioethics (beauchamp and childress): beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice;
The ethical and legal doctrine of informed consent in safeguarding respect for the person's self-determination;
Structural elements of informed consent;
Informed consent variants;
Autonomy and the right to privacy;
Responsibility of the health professional (professional competence, their functions and inter-professional respect);
The professional secrecy/confidentiality of clinical data;
Rights and duties of patients;
3 – BIOETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL ETHICS - 4 hours
Codes of ethics and deontological codes;
Dietitian/patient relationship;
4 – ETHICS AT THE END OF LIFE - 4 hours
Death in today's society;
Palliative care;
The communication;
Grief;
The team in palliative care;
The role of the family in palliative care;

Bioethics, disability and rehabilitation;
