Biomedical Signal and Image Processing

Base Knowledge

.

Teaching Methodologies

The planned teaching methodologies are based on the exposition of theoretical concepts in theory classes
complemented by the resolution of illustrative examples. In order to ensure that the theoretical knowledge is
acquired by the students, the laboratory classes are dedicated to the resolution of practical exercises.
Students will have access to computers with specific software. The project, which will be developed at the end
of each module, allows students to consolidate the knowledge acquired throughout the course. The practical
exercises and projects proposed will be based on real biomedical signals and images, acquired in health
institutions or obtained from specialized databases.
The evaluation method includes a written examination and the analysis and discussion of an article published
in an international scientific journal. At the end of each module, to ensure and foster cooperation among
students, there will be a group project where students will be faced with new situations.

Learning Results

To present the main concepts and provide the theoretical knowledge on signal processing, more specifically
on digital signal processing, commonly applied to the processing of physiological signals. To apply this
knowledge to different physiological signals (e.g. EMG, EEG, ECG) so that students acquire the ability to use
the studied techniques in the areas of diagnosis, therapy, rehabilitation and research. To introduce the Digital
Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard and the Picture Archiving and Communication
Systems (PACS). To raise the students awareness to the potential of Computer Aided Diagnostic systems
(CAD) in modern medicine. To present the different approaches and existing commercial CAD systems in
operation in health institutions. To provide the basis knowledge and the techniques that will permit the
students to develop methodologies for the processing, analysis and classification of biomedical images, with
applications in the development of CAD systems.
