Link-layer Technologies

Base Knowledge

Students should have the knowledge acquired in the curricular unit Data Routing.

Teaching Methodologies

In theoretical classes a detailed exposition of the concepts is performed, using elucidative examples and, whenever possible, with demonstration in a simulation environment. In each practical class a topology is distributed, which should be installed and configured by the several work groups, using either the existing equipment in the laboratory or simulation environments.

Learning Results

Describe and distinguish the composition, internal architecture and operation of hubs, switches, routers and terminals.
Develop the global configuration of switches and routers based on IOS.
Describe the operation of virtual local area networks (VLAN) and their routing.
Apply security concepts in switches.
Understand and configure some protocols used on switches.
Know some technologies at the connection level in Wide Area Networks (WAN).
Design and configure a network according to specific requirements of a given project, applying debugging strategies in communication networks.
