Municipal Roads

Base Knowledge

Basic knowledge of geometric design of roads, geotechnics and construction materials.

Teaching Methodologies

The Theoretical-practical classes have expository and discussion components associated with the learning of technologies applicable and the methodologies to solve problems. This is carry out in an environment of interaction with students, but conducted in a guided way.
Group learning is achieved by solving specific project problems with some complexity, which give rise to a written document submitted by students for evaluation.
In laboratory work the students follow the testing procedures and make reports about the tests carried out. Evaluation: a Final Exam (EF) is performed with 20 points (theory and problem-solving). The approval requires that the mark EF is greater than or equal to 9 values, with minimum values of 3 in each part of the exam.
The practical and laboratory assignments (TP) are worth 6 points. The final grade is NF = 0.7EP + TP.

Learning Results

Objectives: Provide the students with expertise in road construction, specifically regarding earthworks, paving and drainage. Moreover, it is intended to develop students’ skills on the design, construction and maintenance of road pavements, as well as on urban road planning, traffic, pedestrian system and public transport.
Skills: Understanding and analysis of the activities related to planning and management of the transport system; Design of road transport infrastructure in its various components, and knowledge about the applicable construction and management techniques.

Program

1. Earthworks: earthmoving (mass-haul diagram); tests for characterization of soils, geological and geotechnical studies; execution and control of earthworks; soil stabilization; pavement subgrade; geosynthetics.
2. Pavements: types of pavements; constitution of pavement layers; binder and aggregates for pavements; design of bituminous mixtures; production and application of asphalt concrete and cement concrete; pavement design based on a catalog; flexible pavement behaviour and pathologies; maintenance techniques of flexible pavements.
3. Drainage: surface and subsurface drainage systems; hydraulic design of highways drainage systems.
4. Principles and practice of traffic management: road hierarchy; types and management of parking lots; traffic calming techniques; improvement of public transportation; pedestrian system.
