Teaching Methodologies
In this curricular unit the following teaching methodologies are used:
1) verbal methodologies (telling), making use of pedagogical resources: demonstration, audiovisuals and written texts.
Learning Results
The objectives of this course are:
1. introduce the basics of Descriptive Statistics and Probability, in order to familiarize the student with the terminology and main techniques
2. Learn inferential statistics techniques and its assumptions in order to use them in a judicious and critical way, being aware of its limitations, and to interpret the results correctly
3. know the important concepts of the sampling theory in view of its operationalization through the statistical inference
4. Know and know how to use statistical decision techniques: formulate hypotheses and evaluate them through hypothesis testing
Program
1: Descriptive Statistics: Data classification; characterization of univariate and bivariate samples.
2. Elementary probability theory: probability and conditional probability.
3. Random variables – probability distribution: probability and density function; distribution function; parameters
4. Characterization of some univariable distributions: Discrete and continuous distributions
5. Sampling distributions: Random sample, estimator, estimate, sample distribution
6. Sampling: Sizing and composition of the sample; obtaining, analysis and classification of samples; statistical treatment of samples.
7. Confidence intervals: confidence intervals for the population mean, variance, standard deviation and proportion
8. Hypothesis testing: significance test: for means, for variances and for proportions
