Teaching methodologies: Presentation of concepts and case studies. Resolution of quizzes (Think-pair-share and jigsaw discussion). Preparation of essays and presentations.

Learning Results

Students should be able to:
1.1 Identify the various forms of environmental pollution, the main environmental pollutants, their effects on the environment, their sources and treatment techniques;
1.2 Classify natural and energy resources into renewable and non-renewable resources;
1.3 List and describe examples of environmental impacts on biodiversity and habitats, and transboundary environmental problems;
2.1 Justify the relevance of the Sustainable Development pillars;
2.2 Explain how the environmental management principles set out in the Law are applied;
3.1 List and describe the stages of Environmental Impact Assessment of projects (EIA) and identify the entities involved;
3.2 Distinguish the different EIA methodologies;
4.1 List and describe the stages of Environmental Assessment of plans and programmes (EA) and identify the entities involved;
4.2 Indicate similarities and differences between EIA and EA;
4.3 Justify the need to use a strategic methodology to carry out the EA.

2 Sustainable Development: Concepts; Pillars of Sustainable Development; Environmental management principles; Global development issues with environmental implications.
3 Environmental Impact Assessment of projects (EIA): Legal framework; Concepts; Objectives; Stages; Intervening entities and competences; EIA methodologies; Study cases.
4 Environmental Assessment of plans and programmes (EA): Legal framework; Concepts; Objectives; Stages; Intervening entities and competences; Similarities and differences between EA and EIA; EA with Strategic methodology.
