Media Studies Degree

Course Objectives

With reference to the specific nature of the polytechnic education, this cycle of studies has the overall objective to empower its graduates to an competent and responsible exercise, in various fields of media, since the area of journalistic information in its many aspects, to the area of the content production and management, not necessarily informative.
It also aims to transfer knowledge to the business environment, in both local and national levels, through the close links with the companies with which the cycle of studies is related (in the various courses of atelier, in the curricular internship semester, and through other projects whith the scientific and the business community).

Access Conditions

Access to the course is through the following schemes:
a) National Acess Application (for candidates with a course of secondary education or equivalent degree);
b ) Special Applications (for candidates who fulfill the conditions issued in Decree 393 -A / 99 of 2 October);
c ) Special Applications (for candidates with: Above 23 years old candidates Evidences, college graduates and
Technological specialization courses – CET);
d ) Change of Degree/Institution.

The specific evidence required for access to the degree are one of the following: 09 Geography or 11 History or 18 Portuguese.

Professional Outlets

Journalist (Press, Radio, Television, Digital);
Multiplatform and/or social networks content manager;
Producer, editor and/or director;
Image and/or audio technician;
Screenwriter (audio, television, cinema, multimedia);
Media Studies researcher.

Learning Objectives

Being the case of a polytechnic study cycle, the philosophy and structure of the syllabus aim to reconcile the following general objectives with the corresponding skills:
a) Articulate a solid scientific background in the general field of social and human sciences (social psychology, sociology, law, history, Portuguese language) with the more specific fields of Journalism, Communication Sciences, Communication and media production on the various mass media, capable of providing a culturally contextualized understanding of the phenomena of communication in groups and society;
b) Articulate a scientific background with a technical mastery of skills associated with the ability of providing not only a “knowhow” but also a “why it’s done”;
c) Joint projects with the academic labor market in order to adjust the nature of the training with the demands of the labor market, without forgetting how can actively polytechnic institutions contribute to innovate and develop practices in the labor market;
d) Articulate a plan for training scientific and technical skills with a training plan for student s’ personal skills that can enable them not only to the exercise of professional activity but also the development of constructive interpersonal relationships, entrepreneurial initiatives and attitudes of openness to self-training projects and training throughout life;
e) To promote the international mobility of students within the EU, helping to open up to other realities and the construction of a ‘European Citizenship”.
These goals are operationalized in a first level in each Course and the relationship established with which it is related, and a second level in the acquisition of a set of skills that the study plan proposes, in a comprehensive manner.

Access to Superior Studies

The Diploma in Media Studies grants qualification to continue studies in a Master Degree.
