Teaching Methodologies
Teaching methods will be based on theoretical-practical lectures where students should solve and deliver assignments in some cases with the use of computer.
The evaluation includes theoretical and practical assessments. In practical assessments the students should be able to put in practice their knowledge in order to be able to take decisions associated with the montado management, the most expanded AFS in Portugal.
One of the assignments includes a technical report destinated to evaluate the cork harvesting at the ESAC campus.
Learning Results
At the end of this subject the student should:
Master the concepts and techniques related with the management and use of trees and pastures in the montado system.
Integrate the aspects related with tree management with those related with grazing management according to a perspective of sustainability.
Know the aspects related with management natural rangelands, integrating the concepts associated with fire management.
Program
1. The reality and the potentialities of Agro-forestry systems (AFS).
2. The design and the assessment of AFS in mediterranean regions.
3. The design and the assessment of AFS in tropical and sub-tropical regions.
4. Characterization and use of fodder used by grazers and browsers in AFS.
5. Digestive systems of the domestic ungulates and the type of food resources they use.
6. Physiologic mechanisms and agronomic characteristics sustaining the adaptability of rangeland species to different climatic conditions.
7. Management programs for animal use in the montado systems.
