Animal Biotechnology

Base Knowledge

1) Biology I and II; 2) Animal Anatomy, Phisiology and Histology; 3) Genetics; 4) Genetic engineering; 5) Imnunology

Teaching Methodologies

The contents are based on:

1) in the classic exhibition of anchor themes; promoting discussion of the themes at classroom.

2) guided bibliographic research and analysis of articles and reports on the contents of UC for elaboration of group reports or research works

3) in the execution of practical work in the field and in the laboratory (collections and processing of blood, semen and ruminal content) to demonstrate plausible use in the context of laboratory supply

Learning Results

Module 1. To know the biotechnologies that can be used in animal production, as a whole, which can contribute to increase the yield of the factors of production, reduce environmental impact, increase the digestibility of food, accelerate animal growth and dairy production, among others, including fish farming and animal health (50%).

Module 2. Practical application of laboratorial methodologies and tools in several areas of animal biotechnology, from genetics to reproduction, health or general production. To know the biotechnologies available in the area of animal reproduction and their direct and indirect applications in animal breeding, in the conservation of genetic resources (50%).

Program

1. Molecular techniques used; 2. Biotechnology in Animal Nutrition; transgenic animals (bioreactors and xenotransplants); 3. Biotechnology in Animal Reproduction and Genetic Improvement; 4. Biotechnology in animal production and health;
