Teaching Methodologies

Lecture (T) classes will be targeted at understanding the theoretical foundations of the course, being complemented with practical (TP) classes for resolution of questions. In lecture classes the theoretical concepts exposition will be performed by Powerpoint slides projection. In the practical classes the different chapters exercise sheets are solved. Students are encouraged to participate with questions and comments during both lecture and practical classes. At the end of the practical classes it will be discussed the answers to the questions posed and framed topics. All study material is made available through the Moodle platform.

Learning Results

The main objective of this course is to provide students with the fundamental concepts of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It is intended thus, that the students be able to: i) understand the structure and function of the major biological macromolecules; v) understand the cellular metabolism; iii) Identify the main processes of regulation and control of metabolic pathways; iv) comprehend the various processes of storage and expression of genetic information in the cell.

Program

1. Biological macromolecules
Aqueous medium, solubility and pH. Structure and function of biological macromolecules. Proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids.
2. Cellular metabolism
ATP production pathways by living organisms. Fixation of inorganic carbon. Degradation of complex nutrients. NAD regeneration pathways. Lipids and proteins degradation pathways.
3. Regulation of metabolic pathways
Concepts of regulation and control. Post-translational control processes and regulation of metabolic pathways.
4. Molecular basis of heredity
Genes and genome. Mechanisms of replication, transcription and protein synthesis. Regulation of gene expression. Mechanisms of genetic variability and DNA repair.
