Teaching Methodologies

The classes will be of an expository nature, however they will always start from the individual representations of the students and a dynamic of constant interaction with the students will be maintained. The method of group work, research and presentation of works will also be a form of learning to be privileged.Periodic evaluation of this UC will be based on the elaboration of a group work (40%) and a written test (60%).

Learning Results

At the end of this Curricular Unit, it is expected that students will be able to:
– Describe the history of deaf education, from oralism to bilingualism;
– Interpret audiological reports regarding the different types and degrees of deafness;
– Describe the process of oral and sign language acquisition and development in deaf children;
– Describe the different teaching methodologies of oral language and bilinguism
– Understand deafness according to their own identity and culture
– Describe the view of deafness according to clinical and socio-anthropological perspectives;
– Argue against existing myths in relation to deafness and sign languages

1 – Ear anatomy and physiology and different types and degrees of deafness
2 – Language acquisition and development in deaf children: Oral and sign language;
3 – Bilingual teaching methodologies for the deaf;
4 – Myths about deafness and sign languages;
5 – Clinical and socio-anthropological perspective of deafness;
6 – Deafness narrated in children’s literature;
6- Portuguese legislation in the area of deafness.
