Teaching Methodologies

The classes will be theoretical and practical, with incidence in the theory, but not merely expository in character. In the lessons will be presented situations that will serve as a discussion of the possibilities of interpreter’s action in various contexts in which ethical and deontological problems may occur.
The students assessment with be based on:
Autonomous work: theoretical work + practical work 40%
Presentation and defense of a final work, respecting the contents of this program + Frequency = 60%
Final Exam = 100%

Learning Results

This course aims to provide students with the knowledge and guidance that exist in this area. The objectives of the curricular unit are directly related to Portuguese Sign Language interpreter. In this way, it is intended to provide students with knowledge about the act of translation/interpretation, possible situations and translation techniques that may be used; Master the ethical considerations and resolutions regarding the problems that they may experience professionally; Provide students with information about the interpreter’s functions and the working conditions of interpreters in Portugal and in several countries of the world; Promote the ability to prepare the working conditions inherent in each one of the possible situations on the occasion of their professional practice.

Program

The contents of this course will focus on themes such as:
1- Sign language interpreter’s history: the four generations
2- Code of ethics and Deontology of the interpreter of LGP
3- The deaf community and the interpreter of LGP
4- Linguistic-cultural adaptations
5- Diferents situations and areas of intervention of the interpreter of LGP
6- Position, posture and clothing of the performer
7- Interpretation’s time, breaks, replacing interpreters
8- Professional diseases
9- Refresher
10- Contact with the deaf community
11- Associations of interpreters and associative movement
12- Teamwork
13- Characteristics of interpretation for voice and for LGP
14- Preparation of working conditions in the following situations: Conference; Classroom; Theatre; Association of the deaf; Phone Call; Television; Meeting; Job interview; Medical consultation; Examination of the code; Court; Other services.
