Reading exercises: intensive and extensive reading, meaning in context, pronunciation rules
. Oral comprehension exercises:
– Audio texts and note taking
– Viewing documentaries
. Conversational exercises:
– Debates
– Brief presentations

– Translating excerpts
– Summarising and paraphrasing

The students are given the choice between continuous evaluation (one written test, carrying a weight of at least 65% and one optional oral presentation), and final evaluation (written and oral exam). Participation in class is valued at 35%.

The syllabus for this course unit (English I) aims to consolidate and further previously acquired knowledge by providing students with the necessary skills for efficient communication in daily life contexts and, most especially, in the professional context of tourism. It is also geared towards the development of the ability to analyse and deal with information directly and indirectly related to tourism and travelling.
This syllabus has been designed to enable the students to acquire the language skills referred to in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as independent user B1-B2

The themes to explore will comprise topics pertaining to tourism and travelling, notably through the reading and analysis of original texts taken from publications related with the sector, the coursebook advised and multimedia material.
Topics akin to tourism and travelling will also be explored, which prove of interest to future professionals of the tourism sector, such as environmental issues and sustainability, political geography and culture, and UNESCO’s world heritage in Portugal.
. Lexical contents:
Students are expected to expand their lexicon through topic-related vocabulary, with special emphasis on tourist destinations, countries and nationalities, ecotourism.

– Revising grammar structures previously studied
– Revising verb tenses (present, past and future)
– Countables and uncountables
– Collocations (prepositions)
