Instrumental Analysis

Base Knowledge

A complete first year of the course.

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical classes – Elucidation of the principles of operation of the different techniques and presentation of examples of application.
Practical classes – Execution of previously established protocols; bibliographical research and reports on work carried in class.

Learning Results

Biotechnology intensively uses experimental analytical techniques in its activities. The description of the most important techniques for obtaining qualitative and quantitative information is addressed. A practical demonstration is associated with theoretical concepts. This curricular unit gives the student the knowledge of techniques from the sampling and preservation of biological samples, to the main elementary analytical techniques and in the final part to the most advanced techniques such as spectroscopic methods and chromatography, ELISA.

Program

Module 1. Elementary analytical techniques. Analysis and presentation of results. a) Sampling. Preservation of samples. b) Basic analytical techniques: drying, milling, solvent extraction, calcination, gravimetry, volumetry (determination of reducing sugars, protein Kjeldhal), use of selective electrodes, refractometry, polarimetry, conductimetry, turbidimetry. c) Limit of detection, the limit of quantification, precision, and accuracy, linearity and range, calibration lines. Repeatability and reproducibility. Validation of methods and interlaboratory tests. Analysis and presentation of results. Module 2. Advanced analytical techniques a) Spectroscopic methods. Qualitative and quantitative analysis. b) Chromatographic methods: GC and HPLC. Qualitative, quantitative and preparative analysis. d) Immunochemical methods. e) Other techniques. Experimental lab on the precedent subject.
