Teaching Methodologies

The classes will be theoretical and practical, with a theoretical approach only as form of presentation, focusing mainly on the practical component based on group and individual exercises at LGP part. At the History part the classes will be theorical.
The students’ assessement will be based on:
Homework + Reports or equivalent work + Attendance and Participation = 15%
Autonomous work: Construction of video in Portuguese Sign Language = 35%
One test = 50%

Learning Results

This curricular unit was modified, because A3ES evalluation established that the course structure should be completely different, mainly hours. The main goal of this unit is that the student should know and control the body and bodily elements (body and movement of the hands, the facial expression and the three-dimensional space – expressive elements of motion study) that are present in Portuguese sign language; should own communicative competence in understanding and enunciation of Portuguese sign language at an elementary level; should understand and appreciate History and Deaf culture. Students are expected to be able to understand their own body in expressive and language skills basic signs and gestures, acquire structural knowledge of Portuguese Sign Language, cultural, linguistic and historical peculiarities of the deaf community.

– Greetings and compliments;
– Individual;
– Colors;
– Family;
– Numbers;
– Hours;
– Days of the week;
– Months of the year;
– Seasons;
– Climatic Weather;
– Professions.
Grammatical contents:
– Interrogative sentences;
– Adversative sentences;
Linguistic and cultural contents:
– The deaf community and PSL;
– Milan Congress and deaf education system along History.
