Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical Classes: The showing of Videos Introduction of software specific to Lighting Design
Practical Classes – the planning, hanging, focusing and programing of light for the show of the first semester.
The students should be present and participative in the theoretical classes. They will then need to show the the knowledge acquired in those classes during the hanging, focusing and programing of the light for the show in the first semester.
Evaluation:
Presence and participation in the classes (20%).
Presence and participation in the hanging, focusing and programing of the light for the show in the first semester; showing knowledge acquired in said classes (80%).

Access to exams under the condition that the student participated in a minimum of 90% of the classes and activities

Learning Results

Students should be able to:
1. Apply tools given in the conception and practice of lighting in theatre, The Method of McCandless – Basic angles of lighting; the different steps of the method . Developments of the Method – The vision on Richard Pilbrow.
2. Understand systems of stage lighting – Fixtures, accessories and control.
3. Be familiar with the hanging and installation of theatrical lighting; the focusing; programing and Tech. Rehearsals.
4. Understand the distribution of electrical current – Dimmers and Circuits
5. Understand how to analyze a play from the scenic point of view and not literary with the perspective of a light designer.
6. Be familiar with the control mechanisms: Manual and digital light desks. Dimmers -electromechanical and electronic.

Program

A – 5 Objectives and qualities of light for lighting the stage.
B- The evolution of theatrical spaces from ancient times to today. The “Italian” style stage and its fundamental characteristics, and current nomenclature.
C- Principle steps to “Light Design”. Work Methods, procedures, angles and positions. The “Method of McCandless and the revision of Richard Pilbrow.
D- Lighting equipment for stage lighting
1-Fundamental optic phenomenons – Reflection and Refraction of Light
2-Units of measure for lighting and luminous flux – lux and lumens.
3-Lamps – Different types of light production using electricity – Discharge Lamps, Incandescent Lamps, Florescent Lamps.
4- Types of fixtures- PC, fresnel and profiles.
5-Intensity Control equipment (Dimmers).
6-Lighting consoles Color Theory and using lighting software.
