Statistics I

Base Knowledge

Quantitative Methods I and Quantitative Methods II

Teaching Methodologies

The classes are theoretical and practical, according to the curricular plan.

Theoretical component: explanation of the subjects and resolution of illustrative examples.

Practical component: resolution of practical exercises that illustrate and complement the subjects presented in the lectures, under the guidance of the teacher, but encouraging autonomous resolution.

Learning Results

Goals:

Statistics is a fundamental tool for decision making and for an informed forecast of future developments based on knowledge of past and present situations. It is intended that students acquire knowledge of descriptive statistics, probability theory, random variables, the most common theoretical distributions and associated parameters and sampling methods.

Skills:

Ability for analysis and synthesis, oral and written communication, problem solving and application of knowledge in practice.

Program

1. Descriptive Statistics (Introduction, unidimensional and bidimensional statistical variables)

2. Probability Theory (Introduction, conditional probability and independence, total probability theorem, Bayes’ theorem)

3. Random Variables (Distribution function and density function, expected value, variance and standard deviation for discrete and continuous va)

4. Theoretical Distributions (Discrete and continuous)

5. Sampling (Introduction, sampling methods, central limit theorem)
