Highway Design and Safety

Teaching Methodologies

In Theoretical-Practical classes the lecture and inquisitive method is used throughout the presentation of different concepts and several exercises are solved;
The students carry out a practical work in group, involving mainly application of studied subjects, which consists in defining the horizontal and vertical alignments of a small road, taking into consideration a set of
constraints, typical in these matters.
In Tutorials classes a methodology of self-learning and communication skills is followed as well as assisting the students by answering theoretical questions, problem solving and guidance of practical work.

Learning Results

Objectives: To study the main characteristics and constraints of roads, as works of Civil Engineering, focusing especially on the geometry of the roadway;
Generic Skills: Application of knowledge and understanding; Judgment accomplishment and decision making;Communication; Self learning;
Specific Skills: Acquiring knowledge and capacity of understanding in respect of activities relating to the design of means of transport, in its various components, in particular road transportation infrastructures; Learning to analyze the geometric definition of a road and its interdependence with aspects related to road safety.

Program

1. Geometric design of roads: Definition of geometric design of a road, addressing issues commonly encountered in the design stage. The topics covered include: road planning, core elements of a road, the main constraints of the layout, general geometric definition of a road, traffic analysis and forecasting and evaluation of traffic conditions on an uninterrupted-flow infrastructure;
2. Introduction to road safety and traffic signs: the combination of driver-vehicle-road factors in the context of accidents, the importance of the principles of quality and the spatial and temporal consistency in a safe road environment, the detection of hazardous locations. General principles relating to horizontal and vertical signaling and framework of the Rules of Road Signs standards in force;
3. Evaluation of the volumes of soil to move used for the definition of earthworks to be undertaken, in terms of road construction.
