Teaching Methodologies
In the theoretical classes, a theoretical presentation of each subject is given.
In the practical/laboratory component, relevant exercises are solved and laboratory work is carried out.
Learning Results
To enable students to identify and understand the operating characteristics of different types of electrical machines;
To enable students to select machines suitable for each application, and to define the characteristics of power supply, protection and control;
To enable students to operate different types of motors, and to integrate them into common drives in an industrial environment.
Program
Principles of Electrical Machines (fundamental concepts and laws);
Fundamentals of Transformers (voltage and current relationships, bidirectionality, load operation);
DC Motor (fundamental characteristics, speed and rotation direction control, brushed/brushless variants).
Asynchronous AC Motor (characteristics, rotor types, starting and control, energy performance)
Permanent Magnet Motors;
Stepper Motors and other special motors.
Common electromechanical drives.

The course unit assessment is of the periodic assessment type (occurring throughout the semester) and is composed of the following assessment instruments:
- Laboratory Component Assessment (AvCL), which values attendance and participation in experimental activities, the quality and rigor of the results obtained, the ability to report them, and reflection on them.
- Written Examination Assessment (AvEE), which values essential learning about the equipment and phenomena under study, as well as the ability to apply knowledge to solving exercises.
Failure Conditions (20-point scale): AvCL < 10.00 or AvEE < 7.00 or CF < 9.50
Determination of the Final Grade (AvCL and AvEE graded out of 20):
If ((AvCL >= 10.00) and (AvEE >= 7.00), then CF = 0.5*AvCL + 0.5*AvEE, otherwise CF = NRC (cf. Academic Regulations for Higher Professional Technical Courses of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra)
According to the Academic Regulations for Higher Professional Technical Courses of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, attendance at at least 75% of the total class hours of each course unit is mandatory for the student to be assessed under a continuous/periodic assessment system. Failure to meet this criterion will result in no assessment in this edition.
