Teaching Methodologies
Theoretical and practical lessons have a component of expository discussion/application of knowledge. In a second phase support will be provided to students to prepare Hygiene and Safety plans of different facilities/work environments. A field visit to a model company will enable the students to contact with a concrete situation. Throughout the semester there is tutorial time available to students, outside the lessons context, to support understanding of the subject matter for the preparation for exams and frequencies.
Learning Results
Develop skills in the area of Occupational Health and Safety, so that the student can understand the difference between these concepts.
Differentiate between hazard and risk, as well as their classification.
Identify laboratory signage and its placement, according to the associated hazard and risk.
Learn to explain how to prepare a safety plan.
Acquire the ability to consult and analyze legislation associated with laboratory work.
Program
Fundamentals of Hygiene and Health, safety costs versus workplace accident costs, meaning and importance of prevention.
National Policies and Legislation in Occupational Health and Safety.
Importance of occupational accident statistics.
Safety signage. Individual and collective protective equipment.
Identification of Work risks: physical, chemical, natural, biological, environmental, psychosocial, fire and ergonomic risks.
Identification and differentiation of signaling in laboratories.
Implementation of prevention measures. Safety and Hygiene Plans. Preparation of safety procedure sheets.
Application and differentiation of professional risk quantification methods: MARAT method and William method.
