Teaching Methodologies

The teaching-learning process is based on a combination of activities that use diverse typologies of methods appropriate to each type of content. – Oral presentation of contents which are required to attain the necessary skills, in interactive theoretical and practical classes; – Critical analysis of cases related to the topics discussed in class, with study visits whenever appropriate;  -Preparation of project work under guidance; -Oral presentation and discussion of work carried out individually and/or in groups.

The regular assessment for students who have a minimum 75% attendance in class is done through one written test and a project work, with different weightings. Students who do not attend classes regularly, will be assessed in a final exam, with both theoretical and practical components.

Learning Results

As a result of the teaching-learning process the student:

1. Understands the concept and the socio-cultural and economic impacts of European Cultural Routes

2. Understands the concept of thematic route, its organization and structuring

3. Understands and describes the concept of heritage park and its components

4. Identifies and characterizes cultural tourism resources and products, integrating them into tourism itinerary projects

Program

1. European Cultural Itineraries (as defined by the International Scientific Committee on Cultural Routes of ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites) – concept, delimitations and examples.

2. Thematic routes as structuring elements of tourist visits. Concept and typology. The organization of routes – theoretical aspects. Route structuring – components such as itineraries, circuits, routes and cultural programs of tourist interest, and factors to be taken into account in their design. Examples of the Portuguese case.

3. Heritage parks. Differentiation between heritage park, thematic park and natural park. Objectives, components (regions, landmarks, nodes, paths and edges), models, management and impacts. Examples.

4. Cultural Tourism as a factor of regional and local development. Cultural and Landscape Touring; City Breaks; Tourism in Museums and Archaeological Sites; Industrial Tourism; Roots Tourism; Dark Tourism, Scientific Tourism and Literary Tourism.
