Teaching Methodologies

The process of teaching and learning of this course includes oral exposition, reading exercises, reflection and research and practical work with oral presentation in class. Preparation and discussion of reports of visits.

Learning Results

1- Characterize the great periods of prehistory and history of Western civilization;

2- Characterize the major movements of art history, highlighting the architectural styles most used in building heritage in Portugal;

3- Relate the history of art to the history of Portugal;

4- Describe different forms of tangible and intangible heritage in Portugal, contextualizing them historically and

socially;

5- Know classified heritage in Portugal, as well as the general characteristics of classification processes;

6- Characterize ‘heritagization’  processes, in particular those related to the rural world.

7- Describe different types of rural heritage. 

Program

a) Periodization of Western civilization; the Judeo-Christian roots; Roman and Islam influence; major transformations of political, social and economic structures of Portugal as independent country;

b) The remains of prehistoric civilizations; paintings and engravings; megalithic monuments, ceramics and metals;

c) Characterization and contextualization of the major artistic movements in Portugal: the remains of classical antiquity; buildings Paleo-Christian and Islamic influence, the Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, Mannerist, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Art Nouveau and Modernism; other artistic areas;

d) Concept and characteristics of heritage; classification of cultural heritage; legislation; cultural heritage as a

development strategy and as a tourism resource; exemplification of several types of tangible and intangible heritage;

e) ‘Heritagization’  processes: concepts and instances in the rural.
