Teaching Methodologies

A range of teaching and learning methodologies will be adopted combining theoretical and practical approaches. At the beginning of each program’s topic, lectures will deliver the theories and concepts necessary for the construction of required analytical frameworks. This will be complemented with the lecture and analysis of relevant texts and papers on environmental issues, as well as through case studies within the tourism development context. Group work and debates will be encouraged as to incentivate self-training in the field of environment management applied to tourism.

Learning Results

1. Raise awareness about the necessity of adopting responsible approaches considering the main challenges posed to tourism development in the context of natural heritage and ecotourism;

2. Identify the main national and international guidelines focused on promoting sustainable tourism, ethics and corporate social responsibility;

3. Promote the rational use of resources by integrating responsible management practices that consolidate the competitiveness of tourism enterprises and ecotourism destinations;

4. Develop analytical skills regarding the impacts of tourism and the implementation of tools and mechanisms as to minimize those impacts, in particular, by conserving natural heritage and promoting ecotourism

2. Ecotourism and sustainable development: Concepts of ecotourism and sustainable development; Environmental, social and economic sustainability

3. Sustainable development of tourism companies and destinations: Main areas of intervention; Certification systems; Mechanisms for the protection of natural heritage; Analysis of good practice cases

4. Social responsibility in tourism: dimensions of social responsibility; Tourism ethics code; Tourism in poverty alleviation and social inequalities
