Geomatics

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical/practical exposure of the basic concepts of cartography; Execution of practical exercises with maps, for reading, analysis and extraction of information; Theoretical/practical exposure of the principles of GPS systems; Use in the field of the various instruments used in information collection and orientation; Theoretical/practical exposure of the basic concepts of GIS; Use of GIS in spatial analysis and visualization of information and in map production.

Learning Results

1. Know the principles and methods used in geographic information surveys, information processing and cartography production;

2. know the methods used for the interpretation of cartographic pieces, both basic (altimetry + planimetry) and thematic;

3. Use position collection and orientation systems (GPS, others);

4. Understand the theoretical and technical fundamentals of the essential operations performed in a GIS;

5. Adapt the best GIS analysis methods to the specific characteristics of each problem in order to produce, disseminate and visualize digital cartography and develop a critical sense in its practical use.

Program

1. Basics of cartography (cartographic representation, projection systems, coordinate systems, scales, altimetry, planimetry, colours, symbols and principles of cartographic design);

2. Reading of the territory based on base maps (altitude, topographic profile, slope, exposures, orientation) as thematic (geology, pedology, land use, &c);

3. Global Positioning Systems (GPS), position collection and navigation;

4. Instruments used in cartography and orientation (compass, altimeter, clinometer, distanciometer, tachymeter and GPS)

5. Application of spatial analysis tools and production of cartographic information in GIS.
