General Agriculture and Agrometeorology

Teaching Methodologies

Classes are supported by presentations, teacher notes, and discussion of case studies. Depending on the type of content taught, questionnaires will be prepared for individual response or small working groups (up to 4 students) will be set up to perform and report on practical work, whenever justified, the practical work will be carried out in the field or in the machinery hangar.

Learning Results

1. Assess the importance of the national agricultural sector, in the European and world context; Evolution of agriculture in Portugal.
2. Know the interconnection between agriculture and the surrounding environment. Application of knowledge of ecology, climatology, pedology and plant physiology to agricultural production
3 Know the techniques of agricultural production and cultural operations;
4. Characterize the agricultural equipment used.

Program

Agriculture in the World and for Humanity. Biodiversity and plant species. Agriculture in Portugal and in the World. Framework of national agricultural production in European and world agriculture. Characterizing indices used in agriculture: National positioning.
Concepts and definitions of agriculture. Main types of agriculture practiced: summary characterization; conventional/traditional versus modern farming systems.
Agrometeorology concepts. Climate elements and factors, climatological normals, climate classification. Measurements at weather stations.
Climatic requirements of crops, use of agrometeorological models. Protection of crops from the effects of wind and frost. Relationship
between climate change and agriculture. Classification of crops Botany; Agronomic; the life cycle; According to photoperiodism; temperature; soil and water regime; the photosynthetic type. Seed and sowing. Soil and agriculture.
