Decision Support Techniques

Teaching Methodologies

A actividade lectiva decorre em regime presencial, com exposição de conceitos, técnicas e métodos, com grande enfoque em aplicações práticas. Será utilizado software de apoio à resolução de problemas de maior dimensão.

Learning Results

Mathematical modelling techniques are introduced, devoted to some optimization and decision problems,
namely in project planning, project selection, financial management, production management.
This course will also address decision theory, focusing on the bases of Bayesian Analysis, for the
implementation of Decision criteria and models that involve different weigh different aspects of the decision
process. The integration of Active Competitors is then conducted through an approach modelled on the
Theory of Games.
The student should reveal capability to model some decision problems, using linear programming and integer
linear programming. It should also make evident his knowledge on techniques and software tools to solve
these mathematical models.
The underlying knowledge of Bayesian Analysis and its application in the context of decision models, with and
without active competitors, are also required skills.

Program

1. Linear and integer linear programming models. Economic interpretation
2. Techniques of resolution of linear and integer models. Major problem-solving software
dimension
3. Economic interpretation of solutions. Sensitivity analysis and parametric analysis
4. Applications of linear and entire linear programming to the decision making process
5. Decision Analysis
5.1. Decision-making process without and with experimentation
  5.2. Decision trees
5.3. Sensitivity analysis in decision trees
  5.4. Utility Theory
5.5. Decision Making Against an Active “Competitor” – Game Theory
