Course Objectives
A degree in Basic Education has essentially vocation preparatory for professional master’s degrees that confer qualification for teaching in kindergarten and 1st GST and 2nd GST (Natural Science, History and Geography of Portugal, Mathematics and Portuguese Language), based on “Decreto-lei n º43/2007 of 22 February. The aim is to promote the training of professionals with skills in problem solving, teamwork, developing ethical behavior. It is intended to prepare citizens intellectually demanding, informed, responsible and actively involved in the cultural, educational and social development of the community.
With this degree, students will have skills that will enable them, for example, to participate in educational projects in formal or non-formal contexts and have function, for monitoring and educational integration in various educational settings such as daycares, kindergartens and schools.
Access Conditions
Access to the course is through the following schemes:
a) National Acess Application (for candidates with a course of secondary education or equivalent degree);
b ) Special Applications (for candidates who fulfill the conditions issued in Decree 393 -A / 99 of 2 October);
c ) Special Applications (for candidates with: Above 23 years old candidates Evidences, college graduates and
Technological specialization courses – CET);
d ) Change of Degree/Institution.
The specific evidence required for access to the degree are one pair of the following :
16 Mathematics/ 18 Portuguese
or
17 Mathematics Applied to Social Sciencies/ 18 Portuguese
or
19 Mathematics A/ 18 Portuguese
Professional Outlets
Access to 2nd cycle courses (masters degree) that qualify for the professional exercise of teaching at the level of Pre-School Education and the 1st and 2nd Cycles of Basic Education;
To perform technical education functions in various educational settings such as nursery schools, kindergartens and schools;
To participate in educational projects in formal and non-formal situations;
To accompany educational activities (e.g., follow-up study);
To support libraries;
To participate in projects of pedagogical innovation and research;
To elaborate and evaluate didactic resources;
To elaborate resources of diffusion and cultural formation;
To promote activities to safeguard the environment, heritage, health, cultural and linguistic identity;
To provide support to immigrants in their insertion, taking into account in particular the learning of language and culture.

Learning Objectives
The students of Basic Education should develop scientific knowledge in the fields of Portuguese Language, Mathematics and Expressions. In addition, they will develop skills in scientific areas of
Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Science Education. Other objectives of the study cycle are preparing students for the realities of teaching from Childhood Education to 2nd Grade School
Teaching (GST). These objectives are operationalize through theoretical and practical classes, as weel as practical and laboratorial classes and internships, in these scientific fields, having the ECTS
corresponding to the representativeness of these scientific areas, in accordance with Decree-Law n º 79/2014, from May 14th.
Access to Superior Studies
The Diploma in Basic Education grants qualification to continue studies in a Master Degree.
