Postgraduate Degree in Sports Management in Municipalities

Course Objectives

Sport is relevant in today’s society and the possibility of practicing sports and Physical Activity is a right, which decisively contributes to improving the population’s quality of life. Municipal officials attribute significance to it, within the framework of the organization of Municipal Services, in the investment associated with the construction and maintenance of sports facilities and gaming and recreational spaces, in the definition of plans and programs to support and promote Sports and, in the hiring of human resources of the Sports Science Professionals specialty.
To this end, they also assume responsibility at the political and management level, using strategic instruments of sports policy and development, with emphasis on the Municipal Sports Charter and the Municipal Sports Strategic Development Plan. The analysis of the municipal Sports system and services, considering the different institutions and organizational contexts of the practice of Sports and Physical Activity in a municipality, involves specialized human resources. It is important that these professionals are equipped with skills to understand, integrate and evaluate the expectations and needs of all residents, finding solutions for the sustainability and usability of sports facilities and play and recreation spaces, designing accessible sports and physical activity programs to everyone and, contributing with their knowledge to the preparation of the referenced strategic documents. Sports promoted by Municipalities and their respective Parish Councils are a reality in Portugal in the promotion of Sports and Physical Activity development plans, in three essential areas: 1) Management of sports facilities and gaming and recreational spaces; 2) Management of Sports and Physical Activity programs and activities and, 3) contracts for sports development programs. The Postgraduate (PG) in Management of Local Sport Services (GSDA) aims to fill a need and gap in the training offer, aimed at Sports professionals, who carry out their professional activity in local authorities, training them for the demanding functions they perform.

Access Conditions

The following may apply for the course: a) Holders of a bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent; b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree awarded following a 1st cycle of studies, organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process, by a State adhering to this Process; c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the degree by the ESEC Technical-Scientific Council; d) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the ESEC Technical-Scientific Council
