Course Objectives
The Portuguese Sign Language Master Degree aims to train Portuguese Sign Language Teachers according to the law 16/2018 from 7th march, following also the legal framework moulded in the law 79/2014 from the 14th may, mainly what is determined in the article 15th.
The structure of the study cycle stresses the formation in the educational area, specific didactics and has a strong component of training in order to give students the opportunity to interact in as much educational contexts as possible.
It is also intended to promote the creation of applied research projects, with the deaf and school communities, using ESECTV and CEMEIA services, to create bilingual didactical materials to foster students’ scientific and pedagogical skills.
Access Conditions
For the 2025/2026 academic year, the following may apply for admission to the cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree:
a) holders of a bachelor’s degree or its legal equivalent with 120 credits in Portuguese sign language;
b) candidates who have obtained 75% of the credits of the minimum educational requirements for the respective specialisation, 90 credits, following article 18, paragraphs 5 and 7, of Decree-Law no. 9-A/2025.
c) Holders of a foreign university degree with 120 credits in Portuguese sign language, awarded after the first cycle of studies organised under the principles of the Bologna process, by a state that is a party to this process;
d) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree with 120 credits in Portuguese Sign Language, recognised by the Technical and Scientific Council of the ESEC as fulfilling the objectives of the degree;
e) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised by the Technical and Scientific Council of the ESEC as attesting the ability to complete this cycle of studies, with a cumulative total of 120 credits in Portuguese Sign Language.
The recognition referred to in points b) to d) of paragraph 1 only has the effect of granting access to the cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree and does not confer on its holder the equivalence of a Bachelor’s degree or the recognition of that degree.
Under the provisions of the same legislation, candidates will be required to take a test of linguistic proficiency in Portuguese sign language, as specified in the Notice of Admission.

Learning Objectives
– To understand children and young people according to the perspectives of Educational and Developmental Psychology following the specific framework of deaf community and deaf students
– To know how to apply didactical and pedagogical methodologies acquired in the field of teaching Portuguese Sign Language as a First Language, Second Language and Foreign Language
– To be familiar with the Portuguese school system organization and with the educational curricula, mainly the ones that concern deaf students
– To contact with School s for the Deaf and other Portuguese sign language contexts and to apply knowledge acquired in the master.
Access to Superior Studies
The Diploma Master in Portuguese Sign Language Teaching grants qualification to group 360: Portuguese sign language teacher. Also grants qualification to continue studies in a PhD Degree.
