45 years of the Polytechnic of Coimbra
“With this publication, we mark 45 years of construction. When polytechnic higher education was created, the decree-law that established it (DL nº513-L1/79|DR of December 27) stated: “Polytechnic higher education, which is intended to confer a dignity identical to that of university, is responsible, in close connection with productive and social activities, for training…”
It was this pretension, which many have opposed and still oppose, that has not yet allowed the path to be completed. Although society has been slow to perceive this dignity for which we move, it’s a path we’re set on taking. More and more people believe that the differences that exist do not affect this dignity, but rather contribute to it.
And with this will and determination guiding us, we have been able to turn the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra into the “Polytechnic University of Coimbra”. This path has taken us from training bachelors to training Higher Professional Technicians, Graduates, Masters and Doctors. This path that, in partnership with “productive and social activities”, allows us to have a portfolio of postgraduate courses, micro-credentials and MBAs of high demand and quality. This path will lead us to the award of the title of aggregate and the use of the name University.”

40 years of valuing people and the territory
“The purpose of this book is to celebrate forty years of the Polytechnic of Coimbra, aiming to preserve the memory of this journey. In a symbolic way, we intend, through 40 testimonies, to pay tribute to the people who truly are the differentiating factor of this history. They are students, graduates, teachers, non-teaching staff, retirees and institutional partners. Above all, they are personalities who have left their mark on the history of the Polytechnic of Coimbra in some way. They have made and continue to make a difference every day through their commitment, dedication and competence, and have done everything to enhance the Polytechnic and our region.
We intend for this book to be a testimony that serves as a future memory, for without memory there is no identity.”
