Computer Applications in Civil Engineering

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical-practical classes with exposition and exemplification of concepts, followed by their application in practical classes. In practical
classes, problems of increasing complexity will be solved, in different areas of civil engineering, based on Microsoft Excel software.

Learning Results

Understand and use the main features of a spreadsheet;
Add new features and automate repetitive tasks using programming;
Model, summarise, analyse and present quantitative data of interest to civil engineering.

Program

1. Introduction to Microsoft Excel.
2. Use formulas and functions: to perform common mathematical operations; to convert units; to manipulate text; to manipulate dates and
times; to perform conditional analysis; to carry out correspondence and research; with tables and conditional formatting.
3. Build and customize different types of charts and other forms of visualization.
4. Manage and analyze data: import and clean data; summarize data with tables (Pivot Tables) and dynamic graphs (Pivot Charts); sort and
filter; perform What-If analyses; analyze data using Goal Seeking; apply Solver to solve simple optimization problems.
5. Excel automation: record and edit macros; program simple function and command macros in the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
language; concept of variable and types of variables; repetition and conditional structures; design and implement algorithms for solving
simple problems.
