Vias de Comunicação I

Teaching Methodologies

The use of the expository and inquisitive method is expected during the presentation of different concepts in theoretical-practical classes,
with various application exercises being carried out. Students carry out practical group work, essentially involving the practical application of
the subjects studied, which consists of defining the guideline and level of a road, taking into account a set of typical conditions in these
issues.
In tutorial classes, a self-learning and communication methodology will be followed, as well as monitoring of students, through the
clarification of theoretical doubts, solving exercises and guiding practical work

Learning Results

Knowledge: Study of the main characteristics and conditions of roads and railways as Civil Engineering works, focusing especially on their
geometrical layout;
Skills: Application of knowledge and understanding; Carrying out judgment and decision making; Communication; Self-learning;
Skills: Knowledge and ability to understand the activities related to the design of land communication routes, in their various components, in
particular road and railway transport infrastructures; know how to analyse the interdependence of the geometric definition of those
infrastructures with aspects related to economic, social and environmental sustainability

Program

Particularities of road and rail transport: the road vs. the railway;
National and European road and rail planning;
Main elements of road and rail transport infrastructure;
Geometric definition: horizontal and vertical alignements and cross sections;
Fixing the geometric layout based on a wide set of criteria, addressing issues currently encountered in the establishment of geometrical
characteristics;
Traffic analysis and forecasting and assessment of road traffic conditions;
Assessment of the volumes of land to be moved to define the earthworks to be carried out, from the perspective of the construction of a
road or railway infrastructure;
