Teaching Methodologies
The planned teaching and learning methodologies include expository and inquisitive dynamics as well as the written and oral presentation
of reports with the aim of developing written and oral communication skills.
Due to the theme of the course, study visits will be carried out where concepts can be illustrated in a concrete way.
Active learning methodologies will also be used when the content allows and justifies it.
Learning Results
– know the essential concepts related to cities and urbanism
– understand the role and evolution of cities in time and space and the forces that have shaped their development
– recognize various forms of urban layout and the basic elements that make up the urban landscape
– analyze the functions, activities and dynamics present in contemporary cities and the patterns of their distribution in space, assessing their
consequences
– identify the ways and means of planning cities, including in Portugal
– use basic demographic analysis techniques

1. Cities and urbanism
– Essential concepts: city (criteria), urban, urbanization and urbanism.
– The main models of cities throughout the ages and the motivations behind their most characteristic layout (religious, political, military,
economic, social, aesthetic, etc).
– Urbanization processes, considering their various scales and diversity worldwide.
– Urban form and the image of the city
– Cities in Portugal
2. Contemporary cities
– Essential functional components: buildings, leisure spaces, equipment, infrastructures, etc.
– Land use and the organization of urban space: models for the distribution of activities (economic, social, cultural…)
– The internal structure of agglomerations: understanding the relationship between form and function
3. City planning
– Introduction to urban planning: definitions, evolution, Ecourbanism, practice in Portugal
4 People’s cities:
– quantitative (demography) and qualitative (diversity and inclusion) aspects
