Course Objectives
Second cycle programmes, are built on the knowledge, skills and conceptual understanding acquired in first cycle programmes, and they further develop the ability to independently apply knowledge, deal with new and complex problems, issues and situations, and to acquire the skills for future careers in the professional world, research institutions or academia. In addition to the technical competences, students awarded with a master degree shall have good communication skills and the ability to evaluate ethic responsibilities associated with engineering solutions.
The Master in Electrical Engineering aims to provide a high quality degree, specially oriented for the professional environment in the electrical engineering area. It is organized in order to develop competences with high potential for the national grow, for the development of applied knowledge, and for the generation of high value in industry and institutions. The structure and operation target competences with compliance with the Portuguese Law, the Bolonha Process and the recommendations of national and international professional organizations.
Electrical Engineering is a reference engineering area, fundamental for global sustainable development and for the quality of life in modern societies. The Automation, Communications and Energy Systems are ubiquitous areas, extensively present in all modern technological systems. They are fundamental in energy and production systems, transportation, services, buildings and in the telecommunications and Internet infrastructures. In this context, the master offers two competence profiles associated with two specialization areas. The “Automation and Communications in Energy Systems” Specialization Area targets competences in the production, distribution and management of energy, allowing intervention in electrical energy and renewable energy systems, as well as in the environmental aspects of the production, distribution and utilization of energy. The “Automation and Communications in Industrial Systems” Specialization Area targets competences for integrated automation, communications and utilization of energy solutions in the industry and organizations.
The master is composed of a Specialization Course, which has a set of course units representing 55% (66 ECTS) of the total number of credits (120 ECTS), and an Industry Internship, or an original Project or Dissertation in a subject of industrial relevance, that represents 45% (54 ECTS) of the total. Reinforcing the professional and applied profile, a high percentage of contact hours within the curricular units are practical or practical-laboratory type (33% to 43%). A Specialization Diploma can be awarded to students that conclude the Specialization Course.
In summary, the master intends to qualify professionals with high technical and scientific skills, to pursue a professional activity with up-to-date knowledge and mastering the know-how, through the use of advanced practices. They shall possess the ethical awareness that can drive them to pursue the excellence in their professional life. The ideas of lifelong learning and continuation of studies are promoted as a way of facing new challenges. The development of the research ability is also stimulated, in cooperation with the industry partners, in a perspective where knowledge is transferred in both directions, aiming at the industrial and social development.
The global objective of the study cycle is the formation of Electrical Engineering graduates that should be recognized by the equilibrium between their scientific, technical and human education. This education should provide them the ability to develop successful engineering careers in the actual industrial context, as well as to adapt to future changes and to shape new developing paradigms.

b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as satisfying the objectives of the degree of licenciado by the scientifically competent scientific body of the higher education institution where they wish to be admitted;
d) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the scientific body that is statutorily competent of the higher education institution in which they wish to be admitted.
Professional Outlets
Electrical Engineering is a reference engineering area, fundamental for global sustainable development and for the quality of life in modern societies. The Automation, Communications and Energy Systems are ubiquitous areas, extensively present in all modern technological systems. They are fundamental in energy and production systems, transportation, services, buildings and in the telecommunications and Internet infrastructures. There is thus a growing need for professionals who can develop, design, maintain and update these systems, that can include, independently or in an integrated form, the three basis areas.
The main professional opportunities for the graduates are companies operating in the production, distribution and management of electrical energy, in the project, installation and maintenance of electrical installations, automation and communications systems in buildings, and also in the areas of development, installation, operation and maintenance of automation and communications systems in industry, transport and organizations.
Thus, the professional opportunities are:
Electric energy production, distribution, installation and management companies, including renewable energy and electric vehicles;
Design, operation and maintenance of electrical, communications and automation installations in buildings;
Development, installation and maintenance companies of automation and communications systems in industry and organizations;
Extractive industry and manufacturing;
Transport and logistics companies;
Project and consultancy offices;
Public and private institutions including hospitals and educational institutions;
Central and local government services;
Continuation of studies.
Learning Language
Portuguese. In case of foreign students or mobility students, the evaluation can be performed in English.
Learning Objectives
The Master in Electrical Engineering is a second cycle of studies, aimed at both working professionals and students who have completed a first cycle of studies in the area of Electrical Engineering or in a related area of science and engineering.
The Master offers two transversal specialization areas with their respective competence profiles, that integrate and articulate, in a scientifically coherent and professionally relevant format, the areas of the Energy Systems, Automation and Communications.
The “Automation and Communications in Energy Systems” Specialization Area integrates the Energy, Automation and Communications basis areas in a profile that targets competences in the production, distribution and management of energy, allowing intervention in electrical energy and renewable energy systems, as well as in the environmental aspects of the production, distribution and utilization of energy, including energy markets and electrical vehicles.
The “Automation and Communications in Industrial Systems” Specialization Area integrates the basis areas in a profile that targets competences for integrated automation and communication solutions in the industry and organizations. It includes subjects such as robotic systems, industrial networks and integration of industrial systems, wireless communications and industrial computer vision and multimedia.
Both profiles include common general competences in engineering mathematics, automation and control systems, applied information technologies, building automation technologies and corporate management.
The completion of this study cycle will also allow the continuation of studies, satisfying the mobility and lifelong learning objectives in the European higher education area.
Access to Superior Studies
The Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering may be required or valued for access to PhD courses in the Electrical Engineering or related areas, for the institutions/courses that so determine.
