Course Objectives
The Degree in Bioengineering aims to provide an integrated and comprehensive training in the field of life sciences, combining engineering techniques with biology, allowing a specialization in fields such as Biological Engineering and Environmental Technology. The global financial crisis and the recent environmental challenges have driven the shift to an economic recovery coupled with environmentally and socially sustainable growth. This “green growth” will endure supported by specialized and sensitized professionals. It is in this context that the proposal of the Degree in Bioengineering arises. The Degree in Bioengineering has a professional profile, balancing a robust component in basic sciences and engineering with specializations in fields such as Biological Engineering and Environmental Technology. It also allows for a solid training in laboratory techniques, giving the ability to solve problems in multidisciplinary areas. The Bioengineering graduates will be professionals capable of performing engineering excellence in industries where biological, chemical or physico-chemical processes are predominant, and motivated towards sustainable processes integration. The Bachelor in Bioengineering has a total of 180 credits, distributed over 6 semesters (3 years) with two possible branches: Biological Engineering and Environmental Technology. The last (6th) semester of this degree is fully dedicated to a traineeship / project with the elaboration of na original report / thesis and a public defense.

Learning Objectives
The Degree in Bioengineering aims to prepare professionals in the development of methodologies based on biological agents, in materials processing and environmental technologies. In this sense, a training is offered based on the knowledge of basic sciences, in-depth understanding of applied biological sciences and integrated with engineering sciences practice leading to the development of engineering solutions in processes involving biological systems. This degree, with a strong laboratory component and a curricular internship, forms graduates with practical skills and competencies allowing to:
– Apply the acquired knowledge to solve problems, and to be able to provide proper argumentation
– Plan and safely implement laboratory tests, design engineering equipment, and prepare reports
– Enclose environmental and economic aspects at the project level
– Work integrated in teams, developing interpersonal relationships and working methods sustained on quality.
Access to Superior Studies
Graduates in Bioengineering may apply for master’s degrees (2nd cycle studies) in the Biological and Chemical Engineering area or related scientific areas
