CINEP organizes annually the SATHE, a symposium that brings together teachers and researchers to discuss topics of professional, scientific and pedagogical relevance. From 2021 onwards, it will also organise a national colloquium.
Colloquium 2021 Challenges of teaching and learning in the digital age debated at conference
CINEP/IPC organised, on 3 March 2021, the online colloquium “Challenges of teaching and learning in the digital age”. The initiative gathered more than two hundred participants.
The colloquium was attended by experts from eight higher education institutions and representatives of the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN), who reflected on distance learning practices and models, as well as on the role of teachers and students in the context of digital learning.
Guilherme Victorino, from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, delivered the inaugural lecture on Innovation and Design Thinking in Higher Education, followed by the morning panel with interventions from Sandra Cunha (Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave), Sara Dias-Trindade (University of Coimbra), José Joaquim Costa (University of Coimbra), Nelson Dias and Pedro Cabral (FCCN). The afternoon panel included interventions from José António Moreira (Open University), José Alberto Lencastre (University of Minho), Angélica Monteiro (University of Porto) and Rogério Costa (Polytechnic Institute of Leiria). The conference closed with a debate on good practices in distance learning.

SATHE brings together teachers and researchers from IPC and other national and international higher education institutions
The 10th edition of SATHE, organised by the Centre for Innovation and Study of Pedagogy in Higher Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (CINEP/IPC), takes place on 24th and 25th September, via Zoom, under the theme “Higher Education in transition”. The opening session starts at 3pm with José Gaspar, Vice-President of the Polytechnic of Coimbra, and Susana Gonçalves, Director of CINEP and organizer of the symposium.
Susana Gonçalves highlights the need to “adapt teaching methods to the demands of the new digital world and compare teaching practices between countries. In this year’s edition, we intend to discuss the technological changes in higher education and address issues such as virtual teaching and teleworking”.
The programme (attached) includes a plenary lecture by James Pickering, academic leader, lecturer and researcher in Anatomical Education at the University of Leeds and a panel discussion with Holger Kuße, lecturer at the Technical University of Dresden and Coordinator of the “Erasmus + project ENTEP” programme.
SATHE is an international symposium on pedagogy in higher education that brings together teachers and researchers from the Polytechnic of Coimbra and other national and international higher education institutions. Participants receive a certificate of attendance and no prior registration is required.

SATHE 2018 Higher Education: The Living Poets’ Society

In this 8th edition of SATHE, CINEP and the Organising, Scientific and Cultural Commissions of the meeting intend to gather the community of teachers and researchers from IPC and other national and foreign ES institutions for three days full of scientific, pedagogical, training and socio-cultural activities that will be fertile in stimulating, inspiring and enjoyable experiences for everyone involved.
The theme chosen for SATHE 2018, “Higher Education: The Living Poets Society”, celebrates the creative energy of those who produce, communicate and teach science, technologies, humanities and arts and the capacity for renewal, innovation, critical and transformative sense that is common to the best in these professional fields. It also celebrates the classical vocation of higher education, the striving for an ever better society, doing so through educational care, collaboration, research and knowledge sharing.
The programme includes a congress, a variety of workshops, plenary and concurrent sessions, a film cycle and a photography exhibition, tertulias, debates, book launches and some socio-cultural activities and numerous networking opportunities.
Higher education, applied research, pedagogical and curricular issues and internationalisation will be addressed in multiple ways, namely with a plenary conference, a panel-debate, workshops and simultaneous sessions of free papers to which we invite all to participate.
Lines of work:
Revitalising and Strengthening Higher Education – Line focused on innovation and the changes needed in higher education to deal with the problems associated with internationalisation, globalisation, technologies, the media and the so-called post-truth era.
Society and Higher Education – Line focused on the direction of relations and synergies between the academic community and the social community, organisations and companies.
Ethics and Citizenship in Higher Education – Line focused on issues concerning intellectual honesty, discipline, regulation and citizenship on campus and in academic life.
Quality and Evaluation – Line focused on the procedures and criteria for assessing the quality of the ES at all levels, from management to research and pedagogy and teaching.
SOTL, STEAM and Transformative Teaching – Line focused on pedagogical issues, methods and didactics, teaching models and practices and new trends in knowledge production and dissemination, including transdisciplinary strategies, forms of questioning and pedagogical relationships and teaching techniques/practices in, and beyond, the classroom.
