Course Objectives
The creation of the Postgraduate Degree in Vestibulology and Vestibular rehabilitation is based on the fact that it is an area of activity of the audiologist that has been assuming increasing relevance. The evolution of scientific and technological knowledge has allowed to deepen the understanding of the vestibular system and to develop new evaluation methods and intervention strategies. The complexity of vestibular dysfunctions and their impact on balance, spatial orientation, mobility and quality of life require a specialized approach supported by scientific evidence. The diversity of clinical manifestations and the need for a rigorous functional assessment reinforce the importance of professionals with differentiated knowledge and skills in this area.
In this context, the course aims to respond to the need for advanced training and updating of audiologists, providing the deepening of skills in vestibular assessment and rehabilitation. Specialized training will contribute to a more differentiated clinical practice, to an individualized intervention and to the valorization of the audiologist’s role within multidisciplinary teams.
The creation of this postgraduate course is aligned with the mission of the Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Coimbra (ESTeSC), by promoting advanced training, contributing to the articulation between teaching, research and professional practice, favoring the transfer of scientific knowledge to the clinical context, with the development of evidence-based practices and professional qualification and innovation.
The relevance of the creation of the postgraduate course in Vestibulogy and Vestibular rehabilitation is supported by the existence of an international training offer, developed by higher education institutions and scientific reference organizations. In different countries there are advanced training programs oriented to the evaluation and treatment of vestibular disorders, highlighting the United Kingdom, through the Ear Institute (University College London), United States of America (Duke University) and Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA), as well as Brazil, specifically at the University of São Paulo.
The existence of these programs shows that Vestibulogy and Vestibular rehabilitation are internationally recognized areas of specialization, with the need for theoretical, practical and evidence-based training, constituting a reference for this proposal.
