Bachelor in Organic Agriculture

Course Objectives

This degree aims to train and produce higher level technicians with technical and technological expertise
in the knowledge of the fundamental principles, theories, concepts and methodologies used in organic
farming, enabling them to perform the activities and tasks assigned to the area and ensure compliance
with the national and the EU legislation in force, to examine issues related to sustainable development,
production of goods or services and quality control, to understand the interrelationship of sciences with
society, with human behaviour and with economic, social and market policies.
The graduates can intervene in areas related to business activity, to provide services as consultants and
technical assistance, management and agribusiness, dissemination of new technologies, marketing, food
processing and product certification, through active participation with multidisciplinary teams in
designing, developing and project management, consultancy and supervision.

Learning Objectives

A degree in Organic Farming aims to train professionals with higher education in the range of scientific knowledge in the area of agriculture and animal production technologies, with a solid multidisciplinary background.
Interdisciplinary skills needed for organic farming require consolidated knowledge in:
i) Agricultural and Animal Production, with 41% of ECTS. Gives specific expertise in the areas of Agricultural and Animal Production in an Organic form, and which establishes the profile skills of the graduate.
ii) Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, with 17% of ECTS. Learning in this area provides the student the ability to solve practical problems of organic farming, using the application of interdisciplinary skills.
iii) Engineering and Technology (irrigation, drainage and agricultural mechanization) and Veterinary Science (animal health and reproduction), with 10% of ECTS.
iv) Exact and biological sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics, biology, microbiology, botany) and earth sciences (geology and climatology), which together have 23% of the ECTS. The teaching of Exact Sciences, Life and Earth sciences aims to make the student competent in basic disciplines, to understand the biochemical processes of cells, their products and methods and analysis of biological, chemical, metereorológica technologies and data treatment. This knowledge allows a high number agro-food end-use applications, from plant and animal production, and environmental.
v) Economic and Management sciences (Management and Administration and Social and Behavioral Sciences), with 5% of ECTS. Study Management and Administration seeks to provide skills for the creation of business ventures and provision of services, developing marketing, innovation, entrepreneurship and business management skills, which support greater competence in establishing business initiatives and service delivery.
vi) Communication sciences (communication technology, English), with 3% of ECTS, they develop the ability of expression and modes of oral and written communication of information content in multiple languages.

Access to Superior Studies

The bachelor’s degree allows the access to graduate degrees, namely to the 2nd cycle of studies leading to the Master’s degree.
