Base Knowledge

There is no recommended background knowledge.

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical/practical presentation of the basic concepts of cartography; Practical exercises with maps for reading, analysing and extracting information; Theoretical/practical presentation of the principles of GPS systems; Use in the field of various instruments employed in information gathering and orientation; Theoretical/practical presentation of the basic concepts of GIS; Use of GIS in spatial analysis and information visualisation and in map production.

Learning Results

1. Understand the principles and methods used in geographic information surveys, information processing, and cartography production;

2. Understand the methods used to interpret cartographic elements, both basic (altimetry + planimetry) and thematic;

3. Use position collection and orientation systems (GPS, others);

4. Understand the theoretical and technical fundamentals of essential operations performed in a GIS; 5. Adapt the best GIS analysis methods to the specific characteristics of each problem with a view to producing, disseminating and visualising digital cartography and developing critical thinking in its practical use.

Program

1. Basic cartography concepts (cartographic representation, projection systems, coordinate systems, scales, altimetry, planimetry, colours, symbols, and cartographic design principles);

2. Reading the terrain based on base maps (altitude, topographic profile, slope, exposures, orientation) and thematic maps (geology, pedology, land use, etc.);

3. Global Positioning Systems (GPS), position collection and navigation;

4. Instruments used in cartography and orientation (compass, altimeter, clinometer, distance meter, tachymeter and GPS)

5. Application of spatial analysis and cartographic information production tools in GIS.
