Instrumental Analysis

Teaching Methodologies

The practical part follows sequentially the content taught in the theoretical part.

Learning Results

Biotechnology intensively uses experimental analytical techniques in its activities. The description of the most important techniques, capable of obtaining qualitative and quantitative information, is addressed. A practical demonstration is associated with the theoretical concepts. This course unit provides the student with learning techniques from sampling and preservation of biological samples, to the main elementary analytical techniques and, in the final part, to more advanced techniques such as spectroscopic methods and chromatographic techniques.

Program

Module 1. Elementary analytical techniques. Analysis and presentation of results.

a) Sampling. Sample preservation. b) Elementary analytical techniques: drying, grinding, solvent extraction, calcination, gravimetry, volumetry (determination of reducing sugars, determination of Kjeldahl protein), use of selective electrodes, refractometry, polarimetry, conductimetry, turbidimetry. c) Limit of detection, limit of quantification, precision and accuracy, linearity and range, calibration lines. Repeatability and reproducibility. Validation of methods and inter-laboratory assays. Analysis and presentation of results.

Module 2. Advanced analytical techniques

a) Spectroscopic methods. Qualitative and quantitative analysis. b) Chromatographic methods: GC and HPLC. Qualitative, quantitative and preparative analysis. d) Immunochemical methods. e) Other techniques. 3. Practical Demonstration (Modules 1 and 2)
