GIS and Remote Sensing

Base Knowledge

Geography, use of computer equipments and software, and familiarity with the use of internet tools for searching and learning.

Teaching Methodologies

  • Theoretical–practical classes: combine the presentation of fundamental concepts with their immediate application in GIS and RS software , using examples drawn from Forest and Environmental Engineering.
  • Individual integrative exercise: consists of the development of an applied project addressing a real-world problem, requiring the mobilisation of different GIS and RS techniques. This exercise includes autonomous work under the guidance of the instructor, with continuous supervision and feedback.
  • Independent work: guided reading, data collection, report preparation, and consolidation of the practical skills acquired.

Learning Results

At the end of the course unit, students will be able to:

1) Apply advanced methodologies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) for the acquisition, organisation, and analysis of spatial data relevant to Environmental and Forest Engineering.

2) Develop and interpret Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and derive geomorphometric parameters, critically evaluating their relevance and applicability in environmental and forest planning and management.

3) Process and analyse satellite imagery, employing appropriate indices and classification techniques to investigate land use and land cover, vegetation dynamics, and natural resource distribution.

4) Integrate raster and vector datasets into multiscale spatial analyses, ensuring both spatial accuracy and conceptual coherence in the results.

5) Produce  cartographic products and technical reports, applying scientific and professional communication standards to effectively support decision-making in land-use planning, conservation, and natural resource management.
