Teaching Methodologies

The theoretical components are of expository nature for the presentation of theoretical concepts and viewing of videos and discussion of papers and topics chosen by students, within the objectives of the course. Bibliographical research about poultry production methods and, slaughter systems.
Practical classes will have three components: i) management of poultry species, in the poultry unit of ESAC; ii) calculation exercises of productive parameters; iii) study visits with critical evaluation and discussion of the aspects perceived by the student.

Learning Results

The student should be able:
1. To plan a poultry farm;
2. To evaluate the productivity parameters of the farm;
3. To propose solutions for eventual constraints;
4. To keep up the technological innovations of the different poultry sectors.

Program

Poultry products market. Breeding, incubation and production of poultry meat (chicken, turkey, duck and others). Behaviour and welfare of the different poultry species; production systems. Breeding, rearing and commercial egg production activities; production systems. Breeding of game birds – productive cycle and management. Technical and economic indexes evaluation of the poultry production systems. Biosecurity plans and bird health; husbandry key influential factors that affect the quality and the food safety of poultry products.

Grading Methods

Student assessment can be done through continuous assessment or final exam, weighted according to the following assessment instruments:

Continuous Assessment:
Final grade for the course unit = 60% (2 tests) + 30% (project, with oral presentation) + 10% (study visit reports).

* Cumulative conditions for approval:

- Meeting the minimum attendance requirement, or equivalent legal requirement;

- Minimum grade for each assessment element: 9.5
- Minimum final grade: 9.5

Full approval from final exam: with approval grade for the course unit.

Partial approval from final exam: assessment elements with a minimum grade of 9.5

 

Assessment in the final exam:

- In final exam, students who were assessed through continuous assessment benefit from partial approval from the assessment elements in which they obtained a minimum grade of 9.5, this being the respective grade that is weighted in the calculation of the Final Grade. In all cases, the mathematical expression that determines passing the final exam is as follows:

Final grade for the course unit = 60% (2 tests) + 30% (project, with oral presentation) + 10% (study visit reports).

- In final exam, for students who were not assessed through continuous assessment, the mathematical expression that determines approval is as follows:

Final grade = 65% (exam) + 35% (project, with oral presentation)
