Animal Reproduction

Base Knowledge

Anatomy and physiology of animals background knowledge would be desirable.

Teaching Methodologies

Expository methodology is adopted for the presentation of theoretical concepts.
Practical sessions with organs from slaughterhouse, models and field classes in matters related with reproductive anatomy and physiology and breeding management.
Laboratory class of semen evaluation with report elaboration and discussion.
Videos and slideshows.
Bibilographic search, presentation and discussion of a work related to reproductive control in different animal species.

Learning Results

The learning outcomes of the curricular unit are:
1. Know female and male sexual behavior.
2. Evaluate different reproductive methods and techniques.
3. Understand the importance of reproductive control.
4. Know reproductive systems in oviparous species.

Program

The syllabus are organized into two modules:
Module 1 (65%)
Anatomy of female and male reproductive system in different animal species;
Estrous cycles: phases, events and neuroendocrine regulation;
Spermatogenesis: hormonal control and factors affecting it;
Collection, evaluation and perservation of semen;
Fertilization and embryonic development.
Maternal recognition of pregnancy;
Implantation and and placental attachment;
Gestation and methods of pregnancy diagnosis;
Parturition: physiological mechanism and phases;
Puerperium: major events;
Estrus detection methods;
Estrus induction and synchronization methods;
Breeding methods: natural breeding and articifial insemination.
Module 2 (35%)
Reproductive control: reproductive rates and causes of reproductive failure in different animal species;
Fight against infertility;
Reproduction in poultry: male and female;
Reproduction in fish.

Grading Methods

Continuous assessment:

 Module 1: written test [80%] and report on semen collection and evaluation [20%] - 65.0%.

Module 2: written test [50%] and elaboration, oral presentation, and discussion of work [50%] - 35.0%.

 A student will pass when he/she obtains cumulatively: i) the minimum attendance in classes (75%); ii) a grade equal or superior to 7.5 in each of the modules iii) a final classification equal or superior to 9.5;

 

Exam:

In the final examination, continuous assessment students may be partially exempted in any module in which they have achieved ≥7.5.

In accordance with the regulations, the student has access to the examination periods (normal, supplementary, and special).

Evaluation by Exame:

Module 1: written examination - 65.0% 

Module 2: written examination - 35.0%.
