Principles in Veterinary Nursing

It is recommended that the student present general knowledge of biology taught in the 12^th grade.

Theoretical exposition.

Discussion of hypothetical situations that may occur in a situation of public service and in a clinical act.

Simulation of clinical events that allow students to experience and train decision-making.

Whenever possible, follow-up of real situations in the context of clinical follow-up.

Upon completion of this course unit, the student will:

• Understand the basic principles of animal nursing;
• Understand the ethics and legal aspects involved in the veterinary profession;
• Acquire skills in maintaining the health and safety of personnel and setting up teams in a veterinary environment;
• Know the importance of Veterinary Nursing in the field of Medicine Veterinary in today’s society;
• Know how to care for the animal and the owner;
• Acquire practical knowledge about the safe handling and control of animals;
• Have the ability to communicate with pet owners and write the patient history report;Acquire practical knowledge to recognize emergency cases in care and the efficient handling/action of such cases;
• Have the ability to use veterinary nursing knowledge to improve animal welfare in veterinary practice and in the community.

Module 1 (50%)

•  History and objectives of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing
• Veterinary ethics and deontology
• Customer service and communication
• Customer service, communication with the public and conflict management with the customer
• Medication administration routes by the owner
• Advice and information to the client in the clinical prescription

Module 2 (50%)

•  Safety and health of the elements involved in the team
• clinical screening
• Emergency case reception
• Notions of animal welfare in hospitalization
• Handling and containment of small and exotic animals
• Management and containment of large animals

Continuous evaluation:

Each module (1 and 2) will be assessed by a theory test + a practical test.

A student is approved when he has met the minimum number of attendances in classes (75% for each type of class), obtained a weighted average of the module classifications equal to or greater than 9.5 values ​​and a classification in each of the modules, equal to or greater than 7.5 values. In each academic year, a student who does not pass during the teaching period has access to assessment by final exam at the time specified in the academic calendar.

Classification of each Module = 50% Theoretical + 50% Practice

Final Classification Frequency = 50% Module 1 + 50% Module 2

Each and every student will only be able to obtain an evaluation by frequency, with a maximum of 25% of absences from classes effectively taught, not justified.

Final exam assessment:

Written test comprising a theoretical component (50%) + practical component (50%).

Final Classification Exam = 50% Theoretical component + 50% Practical component

When approval is not obtained by continuous assessment, the student has access to the final exam. The evaluation conditions in the exam, normal, appeal and special season, are described in the regulation for evaluating the performance of students at the Escola Superior Agrária de Coimbra, ref: RG_RAAE, revision A3 of 2018-03-14.
