Biochemistry

Base Knowledge

Portuguese 12th-year chemistry or equivalent.

Teaching Methodologies

The syllabus of the Curricular Unit was established in coherence with the objectives defined for the Unit.

After theoretical learning of the contents, students acquire practical skills in the same areas, which allows them to achieve desired objectives.

The transmission of knowledge is carried out in an atmosphere of dialogue with the students, established to favor and consolidate the teaching-learning process.

Learning Results

The Curricular Unit’s learning objectives are for the student to acquire the following skills:

1. Knows the structure and reactions of the main classes of organic compounds involved in metabolic processes.

2. Knows the reactivity of the main functional groups.

3. Knows the structure of the main families of biological compounds: sugars, lipids, and protein.

4. Understands carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.

Program

Structure, nomenclature and physical properties, and chemical reactivity of organic compounds in biomolecules.

Structure and properties of the main families of natural compounds: sugars, lipids, and protein.

Biological functions of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.

Carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.

Grading Methods

Continuous evaluation Theoretical evaluation -75% · 1st Frequency (50%) · 2nd Frequency (50%) Practical evaluation -25% · 2 Reports Continuous assessment of the practical component implies mandatory attendance of practical classes, meaning that the student must attend at least 75% of the total number of practical classes taught. The practical classification of students who do not comply with this mandatory attendance can be obtained by means of a practical exam. Conditions for approval by continuous assessment The student is approved by continuous assessment, if simultaneously: · Fulfill the mandatory minimum attendance to practical classes · Obtain a final grade in the UC greater than or equal to 9.5 values Final Grade Calculation for the UC: Final Grade = 0.25P + 0.75T

Conditions for approval by Final Exam

Assessment in the final exam applies to students who have not been approved by continuous assessment, as long as they present a grade for the practical component obtained either by continuous assessment, or by a practical exam carried out in the last week of classes. secretariat for that purpose. The final classification of the Curricular Unit is calculated based on the classification of the final written exam (75%) and the classification of the practical component obtained either in continuous assessment or in a practical exam to be carried out in the last week of classes (25%)
