Animal Grooming

Not applicable.

Theoretical-practical classes are of continuous assessment.

After the theoretical exposition of the themes will be used videos, case studies, and simulations with a discussion of the products and techniques options more appropriate to situations.

Grooming care will be performed on animals.

Group work will be orally presented.

Know the anatomy and functions of the integumentary system.
Know the equipment, instruments, and materials needed to provide grooming care to animals.
Control the basic grooming techniques used in companion animals and horses.

Integumentary system: general structure and functions; coat classification. Pets coat types: size, texture, colors, patterns.
Common skin conditions and control: fleas and ticks; lice; fungal and mite.
Furniture and devices: Grooming tables; clippers and blades; Combs; Brushes; Shears, Scissors; Dryers; Nail clippers. Equipment management.
Safety at work: animal behavior; Restraint; Muzzles; Sedation.
Brushing and removal of the coat; Bath; Drying; Shearing; Ear cleaning; Anal glands; Nail clippings. Complications.
Products: shampoos; conditioners; perfumes; ear, eye, and oral hygiene products. Choose of the most suitable product for each type of hair and situation.
Stripping different canine and feline breeds: cutting with different sized blades; cutting out with blade extenders; hand stripping; de-matting the fur.
Grooming in horses: brushing, bathing, drying, de-matting, cutting, trimming. Horse preparation for competition.

Continuous evaluation

- Written test (60%).

- Group work- Grooming and hygiene materials (5%)

- Group work - Hygiene care (10%)

- Group work - Aesthetic grooming and dog shows (15%)

- Practical classes with animals (individual assessment) (10%)

FINAL CLASSIFICATION= 60% test + 30% group works+ 10% practical individual evaluation

A student is approved when he/she obtains cumulatively

(i) a minimum class attendance (75%);

ii) a grade ≥ 7.5 in each of the assessment instruments;

iii) final classification ≥ 9.5 values.

Final exam evaluation

A student who does not obtain approval by continuous assessment has access to the examination times defined by the regulations. The assessment under the final exam consists of:

- Written exam: 60%;

- Aesthetic grooming and dog shows written work: 40%.

FINAL CLASSIFICATION= 60% test + 40% work
