Base Knowledge

The student acquires knowledge to perform statistical analysis, build tables / graphs and apply other techniques / tools of statistical inference within the scope of other curricular units.

Teaching Methodologies

In order to achieve the objectives of the UC and confer the competences provided to the student, the learning process is based on case studies, accompanied by a set of instructions and statistical / computer tools that lead the student to analyze each case and draw conclusions. ; in the execution of practical works of application of theoretical concepts; in the bibliographic research necessary to complement the information obtained in class.

Classes will be theoretical-practical. An expository methodology will be used to present the theoretical concepts that will be exemplified with concrete situations in reality. The exhibition will be made using “power point” presentations.

Learning Results

Develop the ability to use computer tools for word processing, data processing and calculation, image processing, preparation of multimedia presentations in Power Point. Develop the ability to use computer tools for word processing, data processing and calculation, image processing, preparation of Excel multimedia presentations. Develop skills in the field of statistics, providing students with an integrated view of descriptive statistics to be applied to situations in the agri–food context. Analyze and interpret the data obtained and present the results in order to summarize the information and facilitate decision making. Use the Excel spreadsheet for the descriptive statistical study of a data set and for the study of the association between two variables. Develop personal skills in terms of structuring logical thinking and reasoning.

Introduction to computer science
  Hardware and software. Operation systems. Examples of computer applications for common tasks. Collaborative work tools.
  Copyright. Types of licenses. Computer security. Ergonomics.
   Data organization in a frequency table and its graphical representation. Use of Microsoft Excel to obtain frequency tables. Pivot tables. Formula programming.
  Graphical representation of data. Use of Microsoft Excel in graphs creation.
  Location measures, non-central trend measures, dispersion measures and asymmetry and flattening measures. Use of Microsoft Excel to obtain descriptive statistics.
   Notions and applications of a presentation manager. PowerPoint.
  Word processing. Using Microsoft Word.
  Image treatment and editing.
  Spreadsheet: functions and procedures; data treatment: basic notions of descriptive statistics; central tendency and dispersion measures. Graphic representation.
  Simple linear regression model. Dispersion diagram. Pearson’s correlation coefficient and determination coefficient. Minimums squares method. Use of Microsoft Excel in the construction of the regression line.
  Publication and presence on the Internet.

Grading Methods

Assessment and conditions for approval.

The conditions for admission to the evaluation and approval in this UC are those contained in the "Regulation for the Evaluation of the Performance of ESAC Students", available at www.esac.pt/alunosregulamentos.php, namely in relation to the minimum frequency and the value of the classification of approval (equal to or greater than 9.5 on a scale of 0 to 20).

EVALUATION DURING THE CLASSROOM PERIOD (time of attendance) The classification obtained during the period of classes results from the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in practical tests performed on a computer. In the first class, it will be announced that the number of tests to be carried out during the teaching of the UC will be four tests, the program content to be evaluated in each one and the respective timetable. Each of the tests will have a weight of 25%, in the final grade obtained by the student.

The student’s final grade, in continuous evaluation, will be obtained by the result of the following expression:

Final grade by continuous evaluation = 0.25 x Written test 1+ 0.25 x Written test 2 + 0.25 x Written Test 3 + 0,25 xWritten Test 4.

 

EVALUATION IN FINAL EXAM (normal season, appeal and others) The classification in final exam is obtained by performing a practical exam performed on a computer. This final exam is divided into parts that are proportional to the frequency tests carried out during classes. For students not approved in the period of attendance, the grades of the tests carried out in the same academic year will be reused in the final exam if: a) the grades are equal to or greater than 7.5; b) the attendance has been equal to or greater than 75% and c) the students DO NOT NOTIFY THE TEACHER in advance of the intention to repeat this assessment (s) in the final exam. The conditions for reusing classifications obtained in the previous academic year, if there is none later, are the same for partial classifications equal to or greater than 9.5.

EVALUATION FOR IMPROVEMENT OF CLASSIFICATION The classification in exam for improvement of classification is obtained by carrying out a practical exam carried out on a computer, identical to the final exam. In exam for classification improvement there is no place to reuse previously obtained classifications.
